Mobility in Veria

The first day, the 3rd of February, the students and the teachers of the program Mrs. Thymiopoulou Christina (contact person), Mr. Asikidis Michalis and Mrs. Karagianni Franka welcomed the five missions with a warm event at the school, while Mr. Ganas Apostolos, the headmaster of the school, welcomed our European partners. The Deputy Mayor of Education, Mrs. Jima Sirmoula, honored with her presence the warm welcome, stressing the importance of implementing Erasmus exchange programs. Initially, a video was presented, which was produced by the Greek team, presenting the actions of the four previous movements in Turkey, Latvia, Italy and Denmark in order to summarize previous work on water sustainability. Each country then presented its school so that both students and teachers would be familiar with the mode of operation, curriculum, infrastructure, facilities and in general the opportunities offered by other European schools, as well as their city of origin in order to inform them about the culture and other cultural characteristics of the other partners. Then followed the presentation of students' work on water pollution in their area, so as to raise awareness of the hazard of the issue and to sensitize people to keep it clean. The Greek team also found it particularly important to watch a video about the multiple benefits of the Erasmus program for the participants in dealing with issues they are engaged with and also interacting with other European cultures. At the end of the event, T-shirts were distributed with the logo of the Greek mobility. The same day later, European students and teachers had a tour at the sights of Veria in order to highlight the history, culture, architecture and beauties of the city and of Greece in general. At the dinner of the first day, the aim was the European partners to taste as many dishes of the Greek cuisine as possible.

An important part of the hospitality was the visit of all participants to Meteora, a place of unique natural beauty internationally and UNESCO cultural heritage. So the second day, the impressive rocks of Meteora in combination with the monasteries were breathtaking. The streams and the river that flowed through the area complemented the beauty of the landscape, proving for one more time the vital importance of the presence of the liquid element in all the aspects of life. Then, the program participants visited the Lithaios River that flows through the town of Trikala, a tributary of Pinios, and were concerned that the presence of water - river, lake or sea - is the basis of many of the benefits a city may have. Late in the afternoon the participants returned to Veria.

On the third day of hospitality the team first visited the Vergina Museum. The participants were particularly impressed by the royal tombs and had the opportunity, with the help of the guide, to get acquainted with both the exhibits and the story of Alexander the Great and his father, Philip II. The visit was followed by a visit to the EHAT refineries in Kalochori, Thessaloniki, where all the members of the program were informed through a thorough presentation about the control of the suitability of drinking water in the city of Thessaloniki and were guided to these facilities, which are responsible for its water supply. Later, there was a visit to the city of Thessaloniki starting with the White Tower and following a walk in the port, by the sea. This time the point was to observe the advantages of a seaside town. The day ended with tasting traditional Greek dishes in Thessaloniki.

The first destination of the fourth day of hospitality was the St. Nicolas Park in the city of Naousa. After the five missions accompanied by students and teachers of the 5th GEL had admired the river Arapitsa that crosses the park and had fun with the ducks, geese and swans in the nearby lake, they observed the trout farming in its fish farm. Then, they crossed this area of high natural interest heading towards the springs, where they had the opportunity to observe how the water flows through the mountain. The Aristotle School in Mieza was the second destination. The visit of the place where Aristotle trained Alexander the Great in antiquity impressed our European partners and brought them closer to the Greek culture and history. Necessary for the theme of the program, Sustainability of Water, was the visit to the waterfalls of Edessa that followed. With their unique beauty and representative of the magic of nature, waterfalls highlighted once again the importance of water in our lives. In addition, the team visited the outdoor water museum in the area that focuses on the uses of water by humans. The day ended with a visit to Pozar's thermal baths in Aridea, in the region of Almopia, to highlight one more aspect of the beneficial uses of water for humans. Students and teachers relaxed after a long day in the outdoor pool with hot water from the springs, next to the frozen river water while it was snowing! Excited, impressed and relaxed by the bath in warm baths students and teachers returned to Veria

On Friday, the last day of Greek hospitality, all members of the program gathered at the school to complete the goals of the week. Initially, a video was presented summarizing the actions and visits throughout the week. All participants watched with great interest, recalling all that they had experienced in the last days. Then, came the power point presentation of the results from the chemical and microbiological analysis of the water from the Veria water supply network, as well as from the rivers in the area, Aliakmonas and Tripotamos. Then, all six countries presented the different uses of water in the human life of their respective regions of origin over the years. After the presentations, students and teachers were entertained by taking commemorative photos and writing their impressions of the whole week on posters on the wall. The next action was particularly fun, with students designing and painting the school's logo on the TEWS (Trans European Water Sustainability) program. Last night's evening was a farewell party with songs and dances from all six countries, in order to familiarize all the participants with the other languages, to cultivate the language of communication, English, and to enhance the feeling of the European citizenship, in particular for students that are still at a young age.

The next day, which was the day of departure, obvious were the emotions of all and the promises to meet again in the future! Some renewed their appointment for the next and last mobility in Portugal. This moment of intense emotions was the occasion to reflect once again on the incredible effectiveness of the Erasmus programs and their contribution to intercultural communication, foreign language practice and the stimulation of European consciousness!
