  • Our city has rivers which are not exploited as recreation areas. Do you know if our municipality is planning a plan for these rivers?

Mayor's answer:

" Tripotamos river is studied for this reason. However, the framework is strict because no constructions are allowed within the riverbed. We are talking about constructing a route for people to walk, but this is still risky because it can inflate the river, something that has happened in the past.

The Aliakmonas is something completely different. The  public electricity company (PEC)  is responsible there. Because of the dam , waters are left naughty and so our possibilities are limited .We can build very specific things in specific places where PEC will allow us.

  • Our city is one of the first to manufacture and operate biological cleaning. Are you satisfied with that? Is there a plan for expansion?

Mayor's answer:

"According to the information I have, biological cleaning works satisfactorily. Even the bad smells have disappeared, as the resident of the region say.’’

  • Do you have any knowledge of any kind of contamination in the waters of Veria?

Mayor's answer:

So you found coliforms to a large extent. This means that there are isolated cases that fall into the river. So, this being something illegal, the Public company of  water supply (PCWS) and irrigation should take some action. They have to find these drains and isolate them, force people to either dig them (if they are in a village), or get into the sewer system (if they are in the city) and impose the appropriate fines.

  • From analyses we did in water from the aqueduct we found that water is of excellent quality. What do you intend to do to maintain this quality?

Mayor's answer:

"First of all we have excellent water that springs from the mountain. The necessary actions are made to ensure this quality from  PCWS, by putting  chlorine in the water  to kill any pathogenic organisms . The problem is not quality, but quantity. Due to climate change, rains and snow are decreasing. In some villages last year and this year there was clearly less water for either water supply or irrigation. A typical example is the tank that goes into the village Rizomata. This tank, which every year flowed, this year did not fill. The climatic data are changing, and that's a problem we'll find in front of us.
