Riga Secondary School No.25 students visiting the Riga Hydroelectric Power Plant

On December 13th, the students of Riga Secondary school No.25 who participate in the ”Erasmus+” “TEWS” visited the nearby Riga Hydroelectric Power Plant. Opened in 1974, it is the second biggest electric power plant in Latvia. It is built in the town of Salaspils, 35 km away from the estuary of the river Daugava.
The main task of this visit was to see how water is used in economy. 2017, the Riga Hydroelectric Power Plant generated 1 016 GWh of electrical energy. As the guide said, “Water is money.” It is quite true. Because of the dry summer in 2018, when the river water level dropped drastically, the Riga Hydroelectric Power Plant suffered big losses, since there was not enough water to generate much power.
